How unreliable are these? I have recently developed a want for one, and would like to maybe get one as a project in a year or two. I love how they look, but I know nothing about them mechanically (save for the 2.6L 4-pot in some)

well, they were a late 80's early 90s Mitsubishi design.
expect the interior to suck when it comes to toys. reliability will be average for a Japanese car of those years, parts will probably be hard to come by.

I don't think parts would be that awfully hard to come by, since the 2.6 was put in a lot of different things.

Ahhh.. Starion. Friend of mine got a new one in the early 90's, took me for a ride. After giving me the max accel to 60 he gave me the max decel to 0 (abs equipped, which I hadn't experienced before.) After wiping the blood from my nose, I was duly impressed.
I realize that was an early expression of car-ness, but I also loved my Mac G3 Beige computer. So maybe I'm a weirdo.

Beware the electrics, especially engine electrics. Otherwise, they are bulletproof.

They rock. I convinced a friend to buy one for $2500 just like the one in the pic where he later painted the spokes of those wheels black. It also came with a spare engine he had rebuilt and installed on the cheap. Then when our fav mechanic passed its inspection he musthave looked over the cat delete.
"Yup the lights and signals work its good to go.."
"But the ca-"
"YOU'RE GOOD."
It sounded like half a big block sawed in half with the 2.6 liters. Just thumpy and black and big meaty rear tires and box flares. The boost was a fast wallop almost until redline.
Best part- in leather trim the backseats were more than liveable, they were fucking great . They were squishy and wraped around to the B pillars so it felt just like a leather papazan or a good resturaunt booth. It also came with steering wheel controls and a giant equalizer stereo setup.
Driver's seat really felt like a Japanese interpretation of a 944 but with some extra 80's gundam angular funk. Nicely bolstered seats and these emergency seat belt purge buttons behing the gear lever were mighty cool. So were the TURBO Turbo turbo graphics on the seatbelts.
The issues he had with it were two of the adjustable shocks that the car came equipped with were completely blown so it would keep its lean for a bit after he made the turn. I think the LSD was worn too so he may have had some locking issues around turns.
Then he decided to be a bigass hipster duche and move to Brooklyn so he sold it fast. Don't know if I'll see one as god as his for as cheap ever again. Basically I loved it.
btw people get by just fine tuning the funky two-injector port injection setup...s'just two massive injectors (more precisely one big and one bigger), adding more boost and more fuel is still pretty damn straightforward/safe/idiot proof, as is the Mitsubishi custom.

I had one for 12 hours back in 1989. They oversteer. Who knew?

I'm assuming some sort of crash after 12 hours?

1989, I was 19. Picked the car up from the dealership and went to work. After work, I drove it around at night for a bit. I knew all of these back roads like the back of my hand, and wanted to take the new car on them..
As the four tires left the ground after the crest (as always) I lifted as to not overrun the engine. Car landed, rear tires chirped, car went sideways, and I'm guessing I hit the tree close to 60-65mph
Here's the crest in a previous car.
Here's me afterwards.
I didn't fare too poorly. My mom's insurance, on the other hand...
And that's when I started walking everywhere.
